FAQ

What are your fees?

Our fees are $60.00/month with no “contracts”

What are the class times?

Classes are held Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The main class will be Friday night at 6:00 or 7:00pm and Wednesday at 8:00

What is the ideal age for children to start?

There is no ideal age, We work with students on an individual basis to make sure they are physically and mentally ready for the material and place them in the appropriate group accordingly. Our preference is that students have previous experience in a classroom environment and that they understand how to behave in front of a teacher and with classroom peers. Current age range as of October 2016 is 4-12 for children.

Children under the age of 8 will require an audition. Please e-mail kyobukan@hotmail.com or call (416) 717-8455

Do you offer a trial class?

Yes, the first class or 2 is free

What should I wear for my first class?

Feel free to wear any loose fitting clothes that allow freedom of movement and that won’t make you overheat. If you have trained karate before, you may wear your uniform and a white belt.

I already study Goju Ryu, is Jundokan Goju Ryu, Canadian Goju Ryu and Japanese Goju all the same?

No it is not all the same. Goju-ryu has been very successfully spread throughout the world by many diligent teachers and students but has, unfortunately, been diluted quite significantly in some cases from its origin. While evolution can be very healthy, most of these changes come from shallow and transparent knowledge or from the desire to add “glitz” for marketing purposes, and not from thorough research into the bio-mechanics and theory of technique. Additionally, many organizations have attempted to blend Goju-ryu techniques with other styles, which on the surface seems effective, but which ultimately leads to something that lacks the depth of understanding that our more focused study produces.
